Exploring the work of Ali Omar Ermes The British Museum

Interview with Ali Omar Ermes
for Goldsmiths UoL at The British Museum
Ali Omar Ermes work is based around letter shape in Arabic which brings in poetry, history and politics and is a combination of language and art.  Ali Omar Ermes is a world famous artist with his work being exhibited all around the world, including The British Museum in London.  He is a very influential Middle Eastern artist with moral and philosophical dimensions to his work.

I was asked to join this project at the post-production stage and was tasked with editing the footage, creating titles, fixing issues with lighting, sound and colour.  To achieve this I worked alongside the artist Ali Omar Ermes, the project director Jim Anderson, and interviewers/translators Fatima Khaled and Luma Hameed.

This was part of a larger project to create learning resource pack for educators and pupils in different languages.  The film will be used by Goldsmiths and The British Museum to go alongside a printed resource pack to aid Arabic learning.  It will be a valuable cross curriculum resource that is mainly target at key stage 4 and 5 for language learning.  However the creators are hoping it will be a flexible resource with a double focus of language and art.

The fact the film is in Arabic created some challenges for me, particularly with adding text and knowing where to cut edits.  However it was a very enriching process.  I became close with all members of the team and learnt more about the Arabic culture, language and writing which was very enlightening.  I have subsequently ran film workshops for Fatima Khaled at the Arabic school she is Headteacher of.
